Fang Fang, M.D., Ph.D., Vice
President and Chief Scientific Officer,
Perlan
Therapeutics
Talk Title: ColdSol, a solution
for the common cold and a personal
journey of product invention

Dr. Fang is the inventor of
Perlan’s flagship product, ColdSol™,
a nasal spray for prevention and treatment
of the common cold. In 2002, ColdSol™
won the Connect Most Innovative Product Award
in biotech R&D category. She was also
elected to be the 10 San Diego innovators
of the next generation technology leadership,
featured in the first issue of “T-Sector”
technology magazine of 2003. Dr. Fang served
as the Scientific & Medical Director for
Perlan Therapeutics, Inc. since its incorporation
in 1997 and was promoted to the current position
in 2001. She was a member of Perlan’s
board of directors since 2001. Dr. Fang obtained
her M.D. degree from Peking Union Medical
College with the highest honor and was awarded
the Union Friends Foundation Award. She obtained
her Ph.D. degree in molecular biology from
the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)
and was awarded the Kamen Prize for Best Thesis.
Dr. Fang did post-doctoral training with Dr.
Erkki Ruoslahti, then CEO of the Burnham Institute
at San Diego. She then finished residency
in anatomic pathology at the Massachusetts
General Hospital, Harvard Medical School,
where she initiated and organized clinical
studies on novel diagnostic procedures including
a telomerase assay for early cancer diagnosis.
Before joining Perlan, she was a Howard Hughes
Physician Scientist Fellow working at the
Salk Institute. She also consulted for Ancile
Pharmaceuticals on both scientific and medical
issues. She has published in several prestigious
scientific journals including CELL and SCIENCE.
She is the principle investigator of three
Phase I and Phase II SBIR grants from NIH
and the 2002 CalTIP award from California
state government.
